Montana currently claims about 12 of the 80 or so lupine species/sub-species/varieties argued over by modern-day botanists. Silky lupine ("Lupinus sericeus") is probably the most common member here in our state. Lewis and Clark collected lupine along Montana's Blackfoot River way back in 1806. You can read more about lupines here at our natural history website, Wild & Free Montana.
