American White Pelicans are the largest native birds in Montana. As such, they are susceptible to overheating, and they often forage at night during the heat of summer. While banding juvenile pelicans at a nesting colony on the east front, we found large, dead tiger salamanders that the adults had delivered to their young in almost every nest. It takes about 150 pounds of food to raise a pelican from chick to fledgling.
