A pair of Redtail Hawks greet the first light of dawn from their perch in a Ponderosa Pine snag in western Montana.
Behind the lens.
This is one of my favorite trees, long-dead but still valuable to wildlife. It's near the road that we drive when we leave Kila and head for the "big city" of Kalispell. More often than not, there's a single hawk perched on one of its branches. This one morning (returning home from a photography all-nighter) was the only time I've ever seen two hawks perched together in this old snag!
