An adult Pied-billed Grebe feeds a small fish to its ravenous chick. You can read more about Grebes here at my "Wild & Free Montana" website.
Behind the lens.
The adult Grebe was swimming in a shadow and just barely made it to the shaft of morning sunlight before meeting up with the chick. The "spotlight" effect works great for the reflection, and the lilly pads help tell the story of where this species lives.
You can tell how hungry the chick was, and how fast it was swimming, because its wake in the water is bigger and more turbulent than the adult's wake.
